For the Feast of St. Benedict*

by Sister Meg Funk

Introduction:

Our Rule is compelling and more than instructive. It is a transmission. We can become Benedictines by following the spirit and directives of the Rule.

We also know something of the 6th C. Benedict of Norcia thanks to St. Gregory the Great. We can imitate his saintly life. While we have no personal autobiographical writings from Benedict like we do of St. Augustine, we have the meaning and significance of Benedict like we have of Jesus, thanks to the New Testament communities and evangelists.

2010

Many institutions use the June 30th as end of year. Here at Our Lady of Grace it is our official end of the budget year.

I am grateful for all who have contributed to my work this year. Was full of travel and many, many conversations, shared silence and rituals.

May the peace of Christ be yours,

Subject: Help w Tibet Project

Hello! I want to request your help with another project.

In just a few weeks, we will walk again for Tibet; this time from Philadelphia to DC (see www.rangzen.org ).

I am writing to ask your help with spreading the word about this 10-day walk.

If you have facebook, a website, or some other way to let people know, can you please spread the word?
I can send you a graphic to post if you want one. Also, here is a link to a video about some of ITIM's previous walks and bicycle rides for Tibet. Can you share this link with others as well?

Meg: I will be traveling the next few weeks.
When I leave the monastery here at Beech Grove I do not post on my blog. Want to stay focused on my assignment where I happen to be. The technology is there to post ahead and time it to go on line day, by day, but I use travel time to pause this blog. It is such a wonderful tool. I never want to take it for granted.

Will post again later in May. My thanks!

Bolivia on BBC

From My sister in law, Marina

Hi!:  The BBC starting today is showing a half an hour program of future highly cultural and historic programs from all over the world of countries that intrinsically have something specifically of their own that can be shown to the rest of the world.  The schedule for this new set of programs in the BBC is: Saturdays from 8.30-9.00am; the same program will be repeated on Sundays from 20:30 - 21.00hrs (8:30-9:00pm).

With Jim this morning we saw "The Carnival of Oruro-Bolivia".

It was spectacular with a magnificent historical narrative.  The same program will be repeated tomorrow, Sunday, at 20.30hrs (8:30pm).  Next Saturday the program will focus on another country.

Can the pope restore the purity of Catholicism?

By Timothy Shriver

Monday, April 5, 2010

The scandal facing Catholics today looks a lot like the Watergate scandal that engulfed the United States in the early 1970s. Then, what started as a crime committed by a few burglars slowly escalated to reveal corruption at the highest levels of authority. The White House counsel, senior advisers and others were punished for their roles. In the end, the president of the United States was implicated and forced to resign.

Watching and Praying

Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are all preparation for the Easter Sunday Celebration.

We go into silence now.

Will shut down my computer.

In the silence is the revelatory text beyond any email or posting can report.

Will be back on line Easter Monday.

Easter Joy to each and all of you,

Sister Meg

Vow, Pray and Pay Study

Jonah 2:9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; What I have vowed I will pay.

Recently American Benedictine Religious Women have petitioned and received from the Vatican permission to shift the language of profession from vows to promise. They have done elaborate and thorough studies to support this initiative. The concerns are to return to the language as stated in Benedict’s Rule and to live the monastic way of life as a whole commitment to a designated community rather than pledge separate vows to God.

Arise Today

Irish Credo

St. Patrick's Credo

St. Patrick's Morning Offering

(Meg:) This prayer is often called “St. Patrick's Breastplate” because of those parts of it which seek God's protection. It is also sometimes called “The Deer’s Cry” or “The Lorica.”

I arise today
Through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
Through the belief in the threeness,
Through the confession of the oneness
Of the Creator of Creation.

I arise today
Through the strength
of Christ's birth with his baptism,
Through the strength
of his crucifixion with his burial,
Through the strength
of his resurrection with his ascension,
Through the strength
of his descent for the Judgment Day.

I arise today
Through the strength
of the love of Cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In the service of archangels,
In hope of resurrection
to meet with reward,
In prayers of patriarchs,
In predictions of prophets,
In preaching of apostles,
In faith of confessors,
In innocence of holy virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of demons,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.

I summon today
all these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel merciless power
that may oppose my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches
and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge
that corrupts man's body and soul.

Christ to shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,

So that
there may come to me abundance of reward.

Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man
who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone
who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye
that sees me,
Christ in every ear
that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,

Through belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness,
Of the Creator of Creation.

update Lectio Matters

from Beech Grove

So, what's the point?

I just posted that long essay on how lectio divina got lost over the course of time. It helps to see that there are many ways to understand Scripture and to interpret the revelatory text.

My book, Lectio Matters before the burning bush will be out in September, as I understand from Continuum's email to Mercedes last week.

This gives us more time to prepare for that text. I feel like it is more important to experience lectio than to know about it so I'm shifting my web site into just doing lectio.

Sometimes I'll enter through the door of Scripture, the hallowed medium. Other times I'll post for your consideration the revelatory texts of nature, and of experience.

When you see it and feel it....all the revelatory texts are simply some form of the experience. Hopefully the text is more of a transmission than a commentary.

I have just viewed the photo section in the New York Times the Chile earthquake report. No amount of words can tally the one glance at one of those revealing pictures. The look of loss, the total collapse of buildings, the sleeping in the street of ordinary people who suddenly lost their homes.

Those images I carried in my mind's eye to Morning Lauds and Eucharist. We prayed for them out loud during the petitions and offered their suffering for healing and solace.

So, the point is to actually "do" lectio on this web site the rest of lent:

*it maybe just a word, a photo or a color that we pause as did Moses before that burning bush.

Lent

Lent is here! We observe it with prayer, fasting and alms giving. Each does their own good works and has it blessed by the superior through the bona opera. We also each take a book from the library and it is blest by the superior, too. We are to read it from cover to cover. Today is strict silence.
